Everything You Need to Know About Dental Implants

Dental implants are highly sought-after tooth restorations, owing to several features that they offer. They are the go-to solution to replace a missing tooth as they are long-lasting and more sturdy compared to their alternatives. Here’s a worthy read that will help you understand dental implants better.

Implants are Made from Titanium and Ceramic

Dental implants are screw-like studs inserted into the jawbone in the exact place of the missing tooth. They are made from a strong and durable metal such as titanium so that the implant offers the expected strength and longevity. The visible tooth-like structure is made from dental-grade ceramic. It has properties similar to that of natural enamel, such as color, durability, hardness, etc. Moreover, it can be customized to perfectly mimic the adjoining teeth in terms of color and contour.

Implant Crowns can be Milled In-house

Every implant crown is custom-fabricated according to the contour of the missing tooth and the spacing available. While most dental practices take a mold of the teeth and send it to a dental laboratory for fabrication, we have a more advanced way of making implant crowns. We use an in-house milling technique, which is a quick and efficient way of making dental restorations.

We will scan the teeth and create a digital impression. It will be input to the in-house computerized milling machine, which fabricates the restoration from a solid block of dental-grade ceramic. The best part about this is the efficiency of the fabricating process, and the very little time required for it. The dentist will not have to make a lot of modifications to the final restoration received, as it will be perfect in terms of contour and size.

Do implants require a specific candidacy?

Yes. When you visit us for the initial consultation, we will run a few tests and take scans and x-rays of the mouth. This allows us to get a better view of the underlying jawbone and also map out the positions of the teeth. Patients looking to get implants, require a healthy jawbone to accommodate the implant. If not, the implant stud may loosen from its socket over time. Also, the patient should not have any significant health concerns such as diabetes, high blood pressure, gum diseases, etc.

How long will it take to complete the treatment?

Placing an implant requires extensive planning as the implant is going to be fixed to the jawbone. A slight deviation in the implant placement can alter your bite entirely and make the restoration more of a disadvantage. The dentist will suggest a healing period of a few months after inserting the implant into the jawbone. This allows the jawbone to grow around the grooves of the implant and hold it firmly in place. After this, it takes a few consultations for the dentist to fabricate the crown and bond it to the implant. Bite tests will be conducted, and any changes, if required, will be made.
