Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a procedure that is used to get rid of the stains on your teeth. In-office teeth whitening is much more effective compared to whitening done at home. Lately, highly-advanced whitening techniques have been developed, which make the procedure more straightforward, more productive, and quicker.

How do stains develop on the surface of the teeth?

  • In most cases, teeth stain due to unhealthy food habits. Excessive consumption of colored foods and beverages contribute to the staining of teeth.
  • Incorrect brushing techniques can also cause staining of teeth.
  • Chewing tobacco and smoking cause staining of the teeth.
  • Teeth that have undergone a root canal treatment often suffer discoloration.

Conventional teeth whitening

The conventional teeth whitening method uses whitening gel to achieve whiter teeth. Teeth whitening gels have a compound called hydrogen peroxide, which acts as a bleaching agent and helps in the removal of stains.

Procedure:  The teeth are screened for any infections and openings such as cavities and cracks. The whitening gel may cause a problem if it seeps in through the cavities and cracks, and hence, they are treated before the whitening process. The whitening gel is applied to the teeth and spread evenly. It is allowed to stay on the teeth for a few minutes so that the stains are removed. It is then removed by rinsing. The process may be repeated multiple times, depending on the severity of the staining.

What is laser teeth whitening?

Lasers have many applications in the field of dentistry. One among them is teeth whitening. The gel used for laser teeth whitening is photosensitive; i.e., it is reactive to the light of a particular wavelength. After the screening process, the whitening gel is applied to the teeth and spread evenly. Laser light of a specific wavelength is used to activate the whitening gel, which then produces a foam. The foam removes the stains and helps you get whiter teeth. Again, it is repeated depending on the level of staining, and the degree of whitening required. Nowadays, it has become the most sought-after whitening practice as it is quick and very effective. People with a busy schedule can especially benefit from it.

What is tooth whitening using plastic trays?

This method of whitening uses customized plastic trays to achieve whiter teeth. During the dental visit, a mold of your teeth is taken after a screening process. The mold will be used to manufacture customized trays from dental-grade plastic. After creating the trays, the dentist checks for fit and comfort. The patient will have to wear them with the whitening gel in it. They can either be worn twice a day, 30 minutes each or overnight as well. The whitening gel will be in constant contact with the teeth, and the tongue and saliva wouldn't interfere with the process, which makes it very effective.

How can you overcome the staining of teeth?

Excessive consumption of sugary, sticky, colored foods, etc. should be avoided. They lead to the formation of a sticky layer of bacteria on the surface of the teeth, which causes staining. Frequent snacking and consumption of beverages should also be avoided. Smoking adds a lot towards the staining of teeth. Regular brushing and flossing get rid of most of the bacteria from the mouth, which reduces the discoloration of teeth.
